Physical Therapy and Shoulder Dislocation

A shoulder dislocation occurs when the humerus exits the socket and is over extended past its usual range of motion. If you are unsure if you dislocated your shoulder, some common symptoms include a loud popping or snapping sound, having the movement of the affected arm become significantly limited, or feeling your shoulder move without initiating motion. While this injury will alter your daily routine, it won’t be permanent. Physical therapy can not only help you recover,  but can also help you learn how to avoid this injury from happening again.

Prior to physical therapy, you will need a medical professional to return the ball of the shoulder back to the socket of the scapula. After it is back in position, your arm will be in a sling to reduce the pain and chance of re-injury. Once you are cleared for physical therapy, you can begin to regain the skills and abilities you lost. Two types of exercises that your physical therapist will teach you are how to increase your strength and range of motion. You will learn a series of exercises that will not only assist your shoulder in recovering, but strengthen it to reduce the risk of another injury.

If this isn’t your first experience with a shoulder dislocation, you are at risk for re-injury. Despite this, it is possible to avoid an encore performance. One successful way to do this is to follow the advice of your physical therapist. By checking in with your physical therapist, they will determine when you can resume doing what caused the injury as well create a program to regain the specific skills that you need.
