Functional Mobility

Functional mobility is described as any basic movement a person makes to perform the activities of daily living.  Many people that suffer from pain are physically mobile enough to fill most of their needs, the motion strains the muscles required to accomplish these tasks. To reach the full potential of your body’s movement, your tissues and joints need to be mobile enough to take on the pressure from any type of activity ranging from lifting a pencil to a sofa.  If you have been previously hurt or sick, functional mobility can be very difficult and those suffering should start researching options such as physical therapy.

A physical therapist’s job is to help a body achieve its peak mobility all while being pain-free in doing so. They target everything that could be creating any physical ailments. Whether it be neurological, musculoskeletal, or cardiological, all of these factors can contribute to whatever is holding the body back from full functional mobility.  From simple, everyday things such as bad posture to more complicated, involved activities, trauma or chronic diseases can cause your body to be less mobile and impair your muscles’ strength.

Once a physical therapist diagnoses what is limiting your mobility, they will inform you of their plan and move forward with treatment after your approval. The physical therapist works closely with every doctor involved in a patient’s recovery.  Everybody is unique and should be treated as such, so a consultation and overview is a very important first step towards physical therapy.
