How to Safely Workout on the Beach

It’s officially summer time, which means heading out to the beach for some fun in the sun. For those who are interested in staying in shape and working out, a beach workout may be the choice for you. Here on Long Island, there are countless beaches to choose from, as you’re most likely, no more than 20 minutes away from a beach at any given time. Beach workouts are great because they combine the satisfaction of working out with the enjoyment and fun of being outside at the beach.

There are many things you can do at the beach when it comes to a workout, and by using the uneven surface of the sand as an advantage to you is a great way to get extra muscles involved, as well as burn some extra calories! The sand also adds cushion that the gym floors and pavement don’t, meaning that your knees and other joints are better protected. Before really getting into the swing of it, it is important to remember to warm up, which can consist of some push-ups, sit-ups, lunges, and squats. This is important because it can help to reduce the risk of injury or fatigue, while simultaneously preparing your body for the intensity of the actual workout. There are many options as to what you can do for the actual workout part, whether it be running down the shore in the sand which adds resistance or running and doing workouts in waist-deep water, like high-knees and squat jumps.

While this workout is fun and a nice switch from going to the gym, it also can be dangerous, as one needs to be aware of other people as well where you are walking. Cutting your foot on shells, or stepping on a crab or jellyfish can be harmful. It’s also important to only go in the water if there is a lifeguard nearby.

Aside from this, remembering to stretch and warm-up is an important aspect of keeping yourself safe while working out in order to avoid injury. Working out on the beach is more difficult than on level ground so prepping your muscles with dynamic stretching will prep your body for the work ahead.

Finally, the beach offers minimal protection from the UV rays of the sun. Wearing and reapplying sunscreen throughout your workout as sweat and water wash off sunscreen over time is critical to preventing sunburns and sun poisoning. Following all of these tips will keep you safe during your summer workout!
