National Running Day

The first Wednesday in June has become known as National Running Day!  They have deemed many days of the year as National “Whatever” Day.  While some are funny and seem to be nonsense like National Yo-Yo day later this week (the 6th of June for you Yo-Yo enthusiasts), by observing National Running Day, you can really do your body some good.  With Heart Disease being the leading cause for death in the United States, which kills nearly 787,000 people a year according to The Heart Foundation, getting out and running on June 3rd may be just what the doctor ordered.

Many health professionals recommend getting a minimum of 75 to 150 minutes of aerobic activity per week and what better way to start getting your body on the right track than going for a run on National Running Day.  Before you go out on what hopes to be a lovely “hump day” be sure to stretch properly and keep your body hydrated.  Also, make sure that your sneakers are in good working order and tied tight.  While there are many great physical therapists out there to help you bounce back from a rolled or twisted ankle, shin splints, and tight muscles, preventative care is always your best bet.

In preparation for National Running Day here are some tips to make your run as enjoyable as possible:

  • Stretch before and after your run.
  • Make a mix on your mp3 device that will help keep you motivated during your run, the eye of the tiger is always a good one.
  • Bring water on your run with you
  • Stay within your limits, no need to risk injury
  • Make this a family affair, or grab a friend, running with someone often makes it more enjoyable
  • ENJOY!
